I was watching Bill Maher on Friday, and one of the guests (Jon Meacham) brought up an interesting point - you can make a valid argument for homosexuals (and some abortion) even if you are religious.

Sure, it's easy to say that our country was founded on the basis of "separation between church and state". But fact is, most people in the world are of one religion or another (even Atheism is a type of religion, or at least, belief).

But let's take a look at the current situation, and how current government is anti-religious.

Divorce

Our government allows for a married couple to get divorced. Now, I'm all for divorce being legal. People change, variables change. I think 2 people who are married should work together and do everything in their power to make the marriage work. But sometimes it's just not meant to be.

However, the Bible clearly, clearly states that divorce is not permissible.

“So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate” (Matthew 19:6).

It doesn't get more clear-cut than that. God does not want divorce, and God is a lot more against divorce than he is homosexualism. Want proof? Find me a quote that's as clear and concise from the Bible.. Is there a passage that says "Marriage is between a man and a woman"? Nope. So, clearly, God meant business when he said "let man not separate".

But divorce is legal. So why is it that we can slap God in the face when it comes to divorce, but when it comes to homosexual marriage, religious people get all defensive? Sounds like they want their cake and eat it too.

So, either we make divorce just as illegal as homosexual marriage (state constitution, anyone?). Or we make both legal.

Killing in self-defence

The bible clearly states "Thou shalt not kill".  Yet, in our government, killing in self-defence is permissible by law, and legal.

The Bible says nothing about killing in self defence - it has exceptions for war and capital punishment, but not killing in self defence.

If the Bible does not allow killing in self defence, then why are guns legal in our country?  Clearly this, as well as the legal permissibility to kill in self defence, go against the Bible.

Yet try to take an American's gun away, or try to pass a law that makes it illegal to kill another human being, even in self defence, and I think you'll find it to be quite difficult.

So our laws allow for killing in self defence, even if the Bible explicitly doesn't allow for it.  But when a mother's life is in danger, and she may die if she doesn't have an abortion, we want to make that illegal?

The same solution we applied to homosexual marriage rights can be applied here.  Either we make all killing illegal, including abortion and cases of self-defence, and outlaw guns while we're at it (we'll keep shotguns for the sake of hunting).  Or we leave things as they are, leaving both abortion and killing in self-defence legal.

You can't have your cake and eat it too!
